Caesars Entertainment has officially postponed the 51st World Series of Poker (WSOP), the world’s largest poker tournament, originally scheduled to start on May 26 at Rio Las Vegas. The decision to delay the WSOP is due to the public health emergency caused by COVID-19, which has led to the closure of Nevada casinos until at least May 1.
The 2020 WSOP has not been officially canceled. Caesars is merely suspending the live poker event for now. The WSOP attracts tens of thousands of visitors to Las Vegas, and Caesars is keen to reschedule the tournament to a later date if feasible.
The company has announced its intention to host the WSOP at the Rio in fall 2020, although Caesars has yet to specify a date. This year, the fall season will officially start on Sept. 22 and conclude on Dec. 21.
Caesars has announced that the 2020 WSOP schedule will be reevaluated due to the event’s postponement. Changes may be made to the previously announced WSOP tournament schedule. The $10,000 buy-in Main Event championship, which is poker’s world championship, will be included once the annual WSOP takes place. Caesars anticipates this to be the most lucrative prize pool in the annual poker calendar.
Ty Stewart, the Executive Director of the World Series of Poker, stated, “Our commitment to running the World Series of Poker this year remains strong. However, we require additional time to proceed on our traditional scale, with guest and staff well-being being our top priority.”
Official WSOP competitions are expected to take place online during the interim this summer. We will soon reveal details about a larger series of tournaments that players can participate in from their homes. These tournaments will be available on WSOP.com and through our collaboration with international operators, allowing players to pursue WSOP glory.
WSOP.com Spring Online Championships Continue
WSOP.com remains the sole active internet-based poker platform in Nevada. Although it may not be the perfect replacement for traditional poker, it provides a viable choice for Nevada residents interested in the game. The Spring Online Championships on WSOP.com will proceed as planned until May 3.
The event, which lasts a month, boasts over $4 million in guaranteed prizes. More than 50 events are still lined up in the schedule. The entry fees for the remaining tournaments vary between $10 and $1,000.
WSOP Events Outside Of Nevada Remain On The Schedule
The Global Casino Championship is the upcoming live event on the WSOP calendar. It is still set to take place at Harrah’s Cherokee in North Carolina from Aug. 11-13, 2020. This invitation-only event is open to those who have met the qualifications.
Furthermore, WSOP Europe, which is held at King’s Resort in Rozvadov, Czech Republic, is still scheduled for Fall 2020.
