MGM Resorts International, a leading gaming and hospitality conglomerate, is advocating for human rights and condemning hate following the violent white supremacist rally that occurred earlier this month in Charlottesville, VA, as well as the terrorist attack in Barcelona, Spain last week which resulted in 13 fatalities.
Last week, Jim Murren, CEO of MGM Resorts International, sent a letter to employees underscoring the company’s dedication to tolerance, respect, and inclusion.
“The letter states, “Our identity is deeply rooted in the safeguarding of human dignity, which we express through tolerance and respect for all individuals. Our goal is to foster workplaces and entertainment environments that are inclusive, open, and respectful to everyone, irrespective of their disability, age, gender, race, ethnicity, religious inclination, gender identification, or sexual orientation. This essential belief is our daily guiding principle.”
Murren also acknowledged that the tragic incidents that transpired in the recent weeks might have left people feeling overwhelmed with hatred and devastated by violence, raising uncertainties about our future – as a country, a global community and even as a species.
MGM stands in defiance of violence and bigotry
The letter continues to state that, even though the white supremacists who protested in Charlottesville are constitutionally entitled to voice their opinions, it is imperative that MGM and its staff take a firm stand against violence, prejudice, and any danger to the right of equality.
Murren also stated that MGM is dedicated to passionately and actively opposing hate speech and actions based on hate.
Indeed, MGM Resorts has also pledged to match employee contributions to several civil rights organizations.
The groups include:
- NAACP
- Anti-Defamation League
- Southern Poverty Law Center
- Human Rights Campaign
- American Islamic Relations Council
- Asian Pacific American Advocates
- United Latin American Citizens League
The Las Vegas Review-Journal newspaper also received a forwarded copy of the letter.
