Betfred has at last obtained a Nevada gaming license. The firm will be in charge of the sportsbook at the Mohegan Sun Casino within Virgin Hotels Las Vegas.
The Nevada Gaming Commission (NGC) granted licensing approval shortly after a recommendation was made earlier in the week during an emergency meeting of the Nevada Gaming Control Board.
The Mohegan Sun Casino within Virgin commenced operations in March 2021, featuring an inactive sportsbook. The venue has been broadcasting games for almost two years without an operator to accept any bets.
Joe Hassan, the General Manager of Mohegan Las Vegas, states that the company aims to be operational in time for Super Bowl bets on Feb. 12, implying that changes will occur sooner rather than later.
Betfred’s sportsbook will be staffed by Mohegan, who will also manage it. All employees will answer to Mohegan executives. The manager from Betfred will have dual reporting responsibilities, to both his own company and Mohegan.
Once the Betfred sportsbook at Mohegan Sun is operational, it will provide retail sports betting exclusively within the casino premises. A mobile sports betting app from Betfred will not be available until the forthcoming football season.
Similarly, parlay cards won’t be available at the sportsbook until that time either. Given that these cards are most in demand during football season, the delay isn’t unexpected.
At present, there are no intentions to provide parimutuel horse race betting upon inauguration. While this may alter in the future, it’s not advisable to anticipate it eagerly. Traditional horse race betting is a service scarcely provided by new sportsbooks.
Betfred at Mohegan Sun sportsbook
Although Betfred at Mohegan Sun sportsbook is located within Virgin, the hotel operator is not involved in the sportsbook operation.
The sportsbook at the Mohegan Sun Casino spans nearly 1,300 square feet, offering space for approximately 100 individuals to watch games either on the video wall or one of the 12 80-inch TVs.
To put it into perspective, this is bigger than both of the two most recently opened retail sportsbooks in downtown Las Vegas.
Guests can also enjoy the games at Skybox, a sports bar and lounge located outside the Mohegan casino but still under the same Virgin roof.
The betting counter at the sportsbook can accommodate four ticket writers. Betfred also mentions the availability of two kiosks within the sportsbook, offering additional betting options.
It is uncertain if more kiosks will be installed around the property as seen in other Nevada casinos.
All bets must be placed in-person or through a kiosk within the Mohegan Sun Casino at Virgin, as mobile betting will not be available at the time of the sportsbook’s launch.
Betfred continues to expand
Betfred, a legal sportsbook, operates in the United Kingdom, South Africa, and the United States. The company was established in the UK in 1967 and has been continuously expanding since then. Apart from Nevada, Betfred provides legal sports betting in these US states:
- Arizona
- Colorado
- Iowa
- Louisiana
- Maryland
- Ohio
- Pennsylvania
- Virginia
- Washington, DC
Betfred intends to expand into five more states at different times over the course of the year.
The sportsbook operator made headlines this week for committing to pay out all US bets on the Cincinnati Bengals winning the Super Bowl, provided they were placed on or before January 25, 2025.
The Chief Operating Officer of Betfred USA Sports, Bryan Bennett, stated:
As a Bengals associate, we’ve enjoyed a unique rapport with Bengals fans throughout this season. Their impressive victory in Buffalo last week convinced us that they’re the top team in the league. Consequently, we decided to settle existing championship bets ahead of time as a token of our appreciation for our fans and customers.
A Betfred spokesperson, during a recent meeting with the NGCB, stated that the company already has a partnership with the Vegas Golden Knights. The company, however, has yet to disclose any upcoming promotions for its Las Vegas launch.
