Station Casinos, also known as Red Rock Resorts (Red Rock), has shut down another one of its properties. The Wild Wild West Casino and Hotel was closed this past Wednesday.
The hotel and casino situated on Tropicana Ave. has been shut down with future redevelopment plans by the owners. Scott Kreeger, the President of Station Casinos, communicated this in a memo to the employees, stating:
Shutting down this property will enable us to fully exploit the potential of the site and its vicinity. Station Casinos has consistently evolved and expanded with Las Vegas, and we will persist in our growth, creating numerous quality jobs across the valley, in line with our dynamic development plan for the coming decade.
PlayNevada previously reported that three other Station Casinos properties were set to close and be demolished. Red Rock announced in July that Texas Station, Fiesta Rancho, and Fiesta Henderson were among the properties due for closure and demolition.
The Wild Wild West was a modest-sized casino with just 164 slot machines and no table games. It also features a hotel with 260 rooms, which is run by Day’s Inn.
Red Rock Resorts today
The properties of Red Rock Resorts are divided into two divisions.
When most people think of full-service casino resorts in Las Vegas, Station Casinos usually come to mind. Six Station Casinos properties are scattered around the Las Vegas valley.
- Boulder Station
- Green Valley Ranch
- Palace Station
- Sante Fe Station
- Sunset Station
- Red Rock Casino
The company owns several properties that are exclusively casinos. The most well-known brand is Wildfire, but Red Rock also manages a few casino-only properties that aren’t under the Wildfire brand. Wild Wild West was also classified as a Wildfire property since it wasn’t operated by Station Casinos, despite it having a hotel.
The following Wildfire casinos are entirely owned by Station Casinos:
- Anthem
- Boulder
- Lake Mead
- Rancho
- Sunset
- Valley View
The company also holds a 50% stake in Barley’s, The Greens, and Wildfire Lanes.
Red Rock is presently in the process of developing various types of properties. The company is constructing a Wildfire casino-only property in downtown Las Vegas and is also erecting the Durango Resort in the southwest region of Las Vegas.
Expect the Wild Wild West to transform into a full-service Station Casino property when it undergoes redevelopment.
What’s next for Wild Wild West?
Wild Wild West occupies 20 acres of land, while Red Rock possesses an additional 80 acres of land adjacent to it.
The Wild Wild West land is situated on the west side of the I-15, just on the opposite side of the freeway from the Vegas Strip, similar to Palace Station.
The 100-acre land parcel is in close proximity to T-Mobile Arena, behind New York-New York, and not far from Allegiant Stadium.
Kreeger stated that shutting down Wild Wild West will enable the company to “prepare the property for future development.”
He didn’t provide detailed plans regarding the company’s future creations. The potential for a property at this location with vast land appears to be limitless.
VIVA Station Casinos, a 100-acre project dream
Station Casinos had plans in 2008 to construct a colossal development named VIVA on this land. The projected $10 billion complex was expected to mirror the scale of MGM Resorts’ CityCenter.
The initial proposal involved constructing three casinos and three hotels on the land, which would have provided VIVA with over 5,000 hotel rooms in total.
Despite the numerous casinos and hotels, there was still ample space available for more construction on the land. One circulating rumor suggested the possibility of constructing an arena during the second phase of development.
The project failed to materialize due to a significant economic recession. Even though the VIVA vision may never actualize, it underscores the potential of the land.
The Nevada Department of Transportation has already commenced upgrading the area’s roads. They have recently launched the I-15 Tropicana project.
The freeway construction plan is divided into four segments. The roadwork has already begun and is set to finish in 2025.
The final stage of the multi-year freeway construction will facilitate easier access to VIVA land.
Red Rock is doubling its portfolio
Soon after declaring the demolition of three casinos, Red Rock procured 127 acres of land for $172 million situated south of Mandalay Bay on Las Vegas Blvd. The company also has ownership of an additional 56 acres in the vicinity.
During the second-quarter earnings call of Red Rock, Lorenzo Fertitta, the Vice Chairman of the Board, stated:
We plan to double the size of the portfolio by 2030 and continue to introduce new properties successively.
The company currently operates only six full-service casinos following recent closures. Given this situation, the goal seems to be quite realistic for the company.
Red Rock possesses sufficient land in the Las Vegas area to actualize this vision. The process for Station Casinos to increase its size twofold is already in progress.
Future Station Casinos properties around Las Vegas
The expansion of Durango Resort, which began construction earlier this year, is currently in progress. The property is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
Kreeger stated that Station Casinos had already begun planning the development of 47.3 acres of land in northwest Las Vegas when they announced the closure and demolition of three of their casinos. The property, currently referred to as Skye Canyon, is their next project.
Red Rock owns additional land around the Las Vegas valley, including the land on South Las Vegas Blvd. and the VIVA land, in addition to these projects.
The company possesses 58.2 acres of land at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Town Center Drive, situated in Summerlin on the western side of Las Vegas. Additionally, they own another 45 acres in the Inspirada section, located in south Las Vegas.
Properties that might be included in future Station Casinos are:
- Durango Resort
- South Las Vegas Blvd.
- Skye Canyon
- VIVA
- Flamingo/Town Center
- Inspirada
Completion of all these six projects will result in doubling the number of Station Casinos properties across the Las Vegas Valley.
Achieving that 2030 deadline might be challenging considering that building smaller properties takes a few years. The construction of larger casino complexes could require even more time.
