WSOP Plans To Return To The Rio From Sept. 30 – Nov. 23

Written By Marc Meltzer on April 1, 2021

The tentative return of the World Series Of Poker (WSOP) to Las Vegas is planned for this fall. The Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino will host the poker tournament from Sept. 30 to Nov. 23. The WSOP will feature the live, in-person $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em World Championship, famously referred to as “The Main Event”, once again this year.

The tournament is one step closer to returning to normalcy, according to WSOP Executive Director Ty Stewart. He stated:

This year, our role at the WSOP is more crucial than ever as we strive to deliver unforgettable experiences and reunite our community of poker aficionados. The theme for 2021 is simple: get vaccinated and return to Vegas.

The present plan is provisional due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Government restrictions are being frequently altered, and the WSOP strategies are dependent on the relevant state and/or regulatory approvals.

It is still unclear whether fans will be able to attend the tournament in person at the Rio.

2021 WSOP scheduled for the fall

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) is set to kick off on Thursday, September 30. It’s anticipated that the inaugural weekend will host a unique charity event, with proceeds going to support frontline health workers.

Notable events include a $25,000 H.O.R.S.E. competition and a No-Limit Hold’em competition known as “The Reunion” with a guaranteed prize pool of $5 million.

The Main Event will commence on Thursday, Nov. 4 and conclude on Wednesday, Nov. 17. There will be four possible starting days for players to choose from.

  • Thursday, Nov. 4
  • Friday, Nov. 5
  • Saturday, Nov. 6
  • Sunday, Nov. 7

If players survive the first day of the Main Event with chips on Thursday or Friday, they will proceed to Day 2 on Monday, Nov. 8. Those who start on Saturday or Sunday will play Day 2 on Tuesday, Nov. 9. All Main Event fields will unite on Wednesday, Nov. 10.

WSOP online 2021 runs this summer

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) is planning summer activities for poker players as the tournament will not occur during its usual schedule. This comes after the success of WSOP’s online events in 2020.

The online domestic series of WSOP in 2020 distributed almost $27 million in rewards over 31 events. This set a new record as the largest online tournament series in the history of regulated poker in the U.S.

Starting Thursday, July 1, WSOP.com will host domestic tournaments on its All-American Poker Network. The online portion will end with a $1,000 championship. This year, buy-ins for online events can be obtained for as low as $1.

The WSOP Online tournament schedule will be fully disclosed on April 15, 2021. Information regarding the international online tournaments will be revealed soon thereafter.

WSOP Europe back for 2021 too

The 2021 WSOP Europe is tentatively scheduled to be held at King’s Casino in Rozvadov, Czech Republic, from Friday, Nov. 19 to Tuesday, Dec. 8. Just like events in the US, this live event’s execution depends on regulatory approval.

Currently, 15 gold bracelet events are scheduled for the European tournament. The tournament’s highlights are the 10,000 Euro buy-in WSOP Europe Main Event and a 50,000 Euro High Roller event.

2020 WSOP did not look like past series

This year’s WSOP plans should bring us a step closer to a more traditional version of the event.

The coronavirus pandemic necessitated a change in format for the WSOP poker tournament in 2020. WSOP conducted its first hybrid tournament last year because of this.

The tournament, which was mainly held online at WSOP.com due to a delay, also had a few events happening in person in December. It was divided into a domestic event, which was won by Justin Herbert. However, he was defeated by Damian Salas in January in the Main Event World Championship.

WSOP beyond 2021

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) might not be hosted at the Rio for much longer. Caesars Entertainment, which owns WSOP, sold the Rio towards the end of 2019. The deal was finalized last year, and it’s uncertain whether the new owners intend to retain the current casino operator.

Dreamscape, the new owners of the Rio, intend to revamp the property. The Rio will be transformed into numerous full-service Hyatt brands. At present, Caesars leases the property from the new owners. However, the future of the casino operations at the Rio is uncertain as neither Dreamscape nor Caesars has disclosed any plans.

Caesars continues to own the WSOP, and speculation about future events has been rampant since the sale was finalized. Potential future venues for the WSOP that have been suggested include Caesars Forum (the new conference center located behind The Linq), Planet Hollywood, Bally’s, and Caesars Palace.
