[toc]The biggest little city in the world has named the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino its favorite place to gamble.

More than 190,000 votes were cast in the 2017 Best of Reno contest. The goal was to find the best businesses, people and places in Reno, Nevada. Readers of Reno.com, Reno Magazine and the USA Today Network Reno Gazette-Journal newspaper made nominations and then voted for their favorites from that list.

Gold, silver and bronze winners in a series of Resorts & Gaming categories were announced this past Sunday and the Peppermill took gold in the Casino category.

The Grand Sierra Resort and Casino took silver. Atlantis Casino Resort Spa won bronze.

From coffee shop to casino

According to the Reno Gazette-Journal, the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino opened as a coffee shop in 1971. The Tuscan-themed hotel and casino now features more than 1,600 hotel rooms, 10 restaurants, a 33,000-square foot spa, and 100,000 square feet of convention space.

The casino itself features more than 1,500 slot machines, 700 video poker games, and multi-game slots. Plus, there is a luxury poker room and state-of-the-art race and sports book.

In fact, the race and sports book at Peppermill Resort Spa Casino also took gold in the 2017 Best of Reno Sportsbook category. Plus, the poker room at Peppermill Resort Spa Casino tied with the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino for gold in the 2017 Best of Reno Poker Room category.

Peppermill Resorts owns and operates Peppermill Resort Spa Casino. The company also owns the Western Village Inn and Casino in nearby Sparks, NV. It also owns three Nevada hotel and casino properties in Wendover at the Utah state line. Plus, Peppermill Resorts owns the Rainbow Club & Casino in Henderson, NV and the classic Peppermill Restaurant and Fireside Lounge on the Las Vegas Strip.

Grand Sierra gets some gold

The Peppermill had to settle for silver in two other 2017 Best of Reno categories: Table Games and Player’s Club.

Casino category runner-up Grand Sierra Resort and Casino took gold in both those categories.

The Grand Sierra originally opened as the MGM Grand Reno in 1978. Bally Manufacturing bought both the Reno and Las Vegas MGM Grand properties in 1985. It turned the MGM Grand Reno into Bally’s Reno at that time.

Hilton Hotels then purchased the property in 1992 and renamed it Reno Hilton. The name of the ownership group changed several times before the property was ultimately sold to the Grand Sierra Resort Corp. and renamed Grand Sierra Resort in 2006.

The property now features close to 2,000 hotel rooms, 10 restaurants, and an 80,000-square foot casino. The casino itself features:

  • Traditional and electronic table games
  • Race and sports book
  • Poker room
  • Slots
  • Keno
