Despite underdog odds, the Las Vegas Raiders claimed a playoff spot for Super Bowl LVI with their defeat of the Los Angeles Chargers in the last game of the NFL regular season. The Raiders defeated the Chargers in overtime 35-32 on a walk-off field goal by kicker Daniel Carlson.
Though Las Vegas could have made the playoffs with a win or a tie. The Raiders won even though the team could have secured a playoff spot while sitting on the ball in overtime.
The Raiders moved the ball into Chargers territory late in overtime and decided to take a game-winning kick to move into the playoffs on a winning note.
The NFL gifted the winners of the last game of the regular season with the honor of being part of the first playoff game of the year. The Raiders hit the road to play the Cincinnati Bengals in the first NFL playoff game Saturday at 1:35 (PT).
A tie in the season’s final game would have sent the Raiders to Kansas City to play the Chiefs. The win means that Las Vegas won’t have to play a team that defeated them by 39 and 27, respectively.
Las Vegas would have been a larger underdog if they had to play the Chiefs in the season’s first playoff game.
